Volvo Neutral Safety Switch Starter Inhibitor (S60 C70 V70 S70) - 9472979

Clutch Pedal Position Sensor.

All modern vehicles with standard transmissions have a safety feature that prevents the car from being started while in gear and lurching forward. The starter is disabled unless the clutch pedal is depressed, but if this switch goes bad it is possible for power to be delivered to the starter even when the clutch pedal is released allowing for a potentially dangerous situation. If you notice that you can engage your starter with your car in gear you should replace your starter inhibitor switch (also sometimes called a neutral safety switch) as soon as possible for safety's sake as well as preventing possible damage to your starter.

*Aka* Clutch Position Sensor, Cps

Replaced a faulty CPS with this item, works just fine, still since 9/5/12. Removal and installation can be tricky since it's above the clutch pedal, but a good flashlight and an idea of how it fits up there will make it a five minute change. Clutch oil from the master cylinder leaked onto the sensor, causing the failure (clutch was done prior to buying car). The CSP also controls the cruise control, which stopped working a feek weeks after clutch change. Some forum searches confirmed this. Just make sure the leaking is done! Cruise control came back, along with starting in neutral safety feature. More info... I tried cleaning my oil contaminated CPS with electrical cleaner, and while I was able to get it to read variable resistance on my multimeter, the car still refused it. I don't recall the range of resistance of the old vs. the new, that may have been helpful here. 2004 V70R 130K mi 12/30/13
